72-year-old arrested with 5 grenades in Kasese
Police in Kasese has arrested a 72-year-old man for being in possession of five grenades. The suspect is Eriya Bilhwana, a resident of Bigando village in Kitswamba sub-county, Kasese district.
Bilhwana was picked up by the army from his residence at Kihyo trading centre on Saturday morning following a long wait that started on Friday. The army stormed Bilhwana’s residence on Friday night and ordered him to open in vain prompting them to wait until Saturday morning.
He was found with five sound flash grenades, a hammer, a knife and several documents. The documents included two letters addressed to Rwenzururu kingdom security minister; briefing him about the 2014 attack that claimed the lives of elven people including the family of Corporal Grace Niwamanya in Bigando.
Some of the documents seen by URN list the names of ten people who raided Bigando and another ten people who were targeted by Kilhumira Muthima, a local militia group signed by the suspect.
However, upon arrest, the frail-looking old man distanced himself from the recovered items. Bilhwana is believed to be part of the group that has been targeting security installations in Kasese, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo districts.
Colonel Keith Katungi, 309 Hima Battalion commander, says intelligence has been trailing Bilhwana for his involvement in criminal activities.
According to Katungi, security has been able to establish that the suspect has been working with some elements in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to smuggle ammunition into Uganda.
Rwenzururu kingdom spokesperson,Clarence Bwambale said Rwenzururu is a peace-loving institution, adding that Bilhwana should be dealt with in accordance with the dictates of the law.
