One dead, 9 injured as rally car rams into fans in Busiika

One person was killed and nine others injured when a rally car lost control and rammed into a crowd at the Busiika motor sports arena, in Luweero district. The accident occurred during a motor rally event dubbed ‘Kiggwa Kw’olwo’.
Paul Kangave, the Savannah regional police spokesperson had earlier said that all the ten sustained multiple injuries with no deaths recorded.
“All the ten victims are alive. All of them have been rushed to several hospitals and we have not received any reports indicating that one may have died the way to health facilities. However, several were in critical condition,” Kangave said in an interview.
He added that those in critical conditions were rushed to Mulago national referral hospital others to Nsambya hospital and those with minor injuries were taken to the nearby health centres.
But a statement released by police later indicated that one of the injured had died. According to police, the rally driver was trying to save a thief who snatched a phone from one of the spectators.
Eyewitnesses who recorded statements with police said that the crowd emerged as different people joined the chase for the theif.
“Most people never knew why the others were running; creating panic at the time the vehicle reached this spot. Although the driver tried to brake, it was too late thus ramming into bystanders,” an eyewitness told police.
