Netball World Cup: Jamaica frustrates Uganda
Uganda registered a disappointing 49-61 loss at the hands of Jamaica in a Pool G Netball World Cup tie played at the Cape Town International Conventions Centre Monday.
The result was a sham of the She Cranes side that had, on Saturday, scared defending champions and the world’s second-ranked New Zealand despite a 44-54 loss.
The Sunshine Girls’ win in Cape Town against She Cranes was the third straight win at the World Cup competition. Uganda suffered a 59-47 defeat at the 2015 tournament in Sydney before registering a 61-48 at the Liverpool event.
She Cranes tried their usual flowing game from the onset with Margaret Baagala doing her feeding role from the centre but the Sunshine Girls mastered their opponents’ style –blocking numerous attacking attempts.
Jamaica took a 38-21 lead at half time, and on resumption, Baagala was up to the task of serving shooters Mary Nuba and Shadiah Nassanga, who in turn converted to give Uganda a 16-11 lead in the 3rd quarter. But the last quarter spelt seemed a shared affair but it was too late for She Cranes as the game ended 61-49. Uganda’s consolation came through Nassanga, who emerged as the Most Valuable Player.
Uganda takes a rest on Tuesday before facing Wales in yet another unpredictable fixture on Wednesday.
