Kamwokya residents fight over MP Nsereko’s cash donation

Some of the residents fighting over the cash

Residents of Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb have clashed over money donated by Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko for distribution to voters.

Trouble started after Nsereko, who was campaigning in Kamwokya on Sunday evening left his campaign agents with Shs 7 million to share among voters, according to some of the residents. Each person was supposed to take home at least Shs 5,000.

After the legislator’s departure, a group of goons showed up and started hounding the woman who was holding the money and ran away with several bundles.

According to the residents, this happened because the men were ordered to stand aside since Nsereko’s donation was only targeting women. Some of the residents blamed the chaos on Nsereko for “his primitive way” distributing the money, saying he should have sent the money on their mobile money accounts or bank accounts.

Albert Nsabiimaana, a resident said women made a mistake of leaving the venue without security which exposed them to goons. Gift Nyangoma, one of the residents, said over five residents sustained injuries.

It took the intervention of Emmanuel Sserunjongi, the Kampala Central mayor, who had already left the venue to return and restore sanity among residents. When he reached, women lined up to share the little of what was left.
