Mak staff remanded again over fake Covid-19 results
Uganda has registered a 22 per cent decrease in new Covid-19 cases in the past three weeks, government statistics show
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has further remanded three Makerere University staff on allegations of issuing out negative results to patients who have tested positive for Covid-19.
The suspects are Emmanuel Kawalya,36, a laboratory assistant/Covid-19 sample collector at Makerere University Hospital, Gideon Nsubuga,25, a laboratory technologist/molecular biologist at Makerere University College of Health Sciences Laboratory, and Dafala Kezimbira,30, an IT personnel at Makerere University College of Health Sciences Laboratory.
They were first charged last Friday with five counts of forgery of Covid-19 results and doing a negligent act likely to spread infection or disease.
They were charged alongside Justine Nasonko,28, a businesswoman who deals in printing on Nasser Road in Kampala.
Remanded
When the case came up for mention before Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu yesterday, State prosecutor Mariam Njuki sought court to send the suspects back to Kitalya Prison, saying the state attorney prosecuting the case was indisposed.
The suspects have been remanded until November 3 when they will reappear in court for mention of their case.
Prosecution
Prosecution contends that Kawalya, Nsubuga, Kezimbira and Nasonko and others still at large, between September and October in Kampala, issued out negative test results to Covid-19 positive clients, which they knew or had reason to believe is likely to spread infection.
On the counts of forgery, it alleged that the four and others still at large in October with intent to defraud or deceive, made false Covid-19 test result certificates in the names of four people: Al Noumani Mohawk Said Khaila, James Bernard Walusimbi, Irene Namubiru and Milliam Zawadi purporting it to have been genuinely issued by the Minister of Health/Makerere University College of Health Sciences.
