As several candidates head to Kyambogo for presidential nominations, the Police have issued several diversions for road users.

The guidelines will run through Monday-Tuesday, with the Police warning that Kyambogo Cricket Grounds, the presidential nomination centre, will only be accessible by people accredited by the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Commander, Norman Musinga, traffic flow along routes leading to and from Kyambogo University will be diverted at Spear Motors, Banda trading centre, Kireka trading centre, Kigobe road at the National Council for Higher Education and at Jokas hotel in Bweyogerere.

“Kyambogo cricket ground (presidential nomination centre) will only be accessible to presidential aspirants, their recommended number of people accredited by EC and EC officials. The accredited VIPs will access the nomination centre through Kyambogo road, Kyambogo University western gate and park as will be directed by traffic,” Musinga said in a statement issued over the weekend.

By Saturday, 10 contenders, including the incumbent, President Yoweri Museveni, independents pastor Fred Mwesigye, Nancy Linda Kalembe, Joseph Kabuleta, John Kaktumba and Willy Mayambala had been cleared by EC for nomination.

Others that have been cleared include former security minister, Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, former army commander and president of Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, Kyadondo East MP and president of National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi,  and the president of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat.

The nominations are scheduled from November 2-3, starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

On Thursday, the EC chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said aspirants will use only three vehicles while going for nomination, adding that each vehicle should not carry more than four persons, including the driver.

“Each of the vehicles shall bear a Police sticker. The commission strongly warns aspirants against mobilizing supporters to accompany them to and from the nomination venue, as processions are not permitted during this exercise,” Byabakama said.
