A policeman has been charged with last month’s murder of Ronald Ssebulime. Corporal David Ssali, 46, attached to Nagalama police station was today arraigned before the Mukono Grade One magistrate Mariam Nulugya.

Court heard that Ssali on Sunday March 24, at Nagojje trading center in Kayunga district, shot dead Ssebulime. Rachael Namutebi, who appeared on behalf of the resident state attorney, told court that investigations into the case are still on-going and requested for more time.

Nulugya remanded Ssali to Luzira prison until April 30. Muwada Nkunyingi, the lawyer of Ssebulime’s family says now that the trial has started, he hoped that the family of the deceased will get justice.

“We’re satisfied that at least some of the suspects have been paraded before court here. We have seen one of the policemen because we were worried that perhaps police and prosecution may prefer loose charges. We’re contended that they have preferred murder charges. But were being skeptical as to why the other members of the patrol, the other police officers. We don’t want just a selection of a few. We want whoever participated in the murder of Ssebulime to be paraded in court…we’re also skeptical about how far the investigations against Hon [Idah] Nantaba have reached.” said Nkunyigi.

Ssebulime was gunned down by police officers on March 24, in Mukono district on wrongful suspicion of tracking ICT and National Guidance state minister Idah Nantaba with intentions of harming her.

Police officers on patrol arrested Ssebulime, handcuffed him and dumped him on a police patrol van before they pulled him down and shot him dead.
