Priest Dragged to Police for Beating Parishioner

The victim Bagamuhunda reported the assault case to Police 

Rev Gad Sanyu, a parish priest of Buranga Church of Uganda in Kigezi Diocese is being investigated for assaulting the parish treasurer.

Rev. Sanyu is said to have assaulted the treasurer identified as John Bagamuhunda on Friday morning at the church in Kamuganguzi Sub County, Kabale district

The two are said to have disagreed over church offertory, which was meant construct a house of the bishop at the church.

The victim Bagamuhunda, who is also a retired catechist, says he recently suggested to Sanyu that the money being collected should be used to renovate the old traditional house that is available for the bishop to sleep in.

Sanyu however, rejected the Bagamuhunda’s proposal and insisted that the money should be used to construct a new permanent house.

Bagamuhunda says he was beaten by Sanyu on Friday as they headed for a stakeholders meeting about the plan for the money being collected.

Isaac Bamwanga, one of the eye witnesses and a Christian at the church says Sanyu picked a big stick and hit Bagamuhunda in the head after greeting him.

Bamwanga says they rushed Bagamuhunda to Kamuganguzi health centre III while bleeding on the forehead to get a first aid before reporting the matter to Kamuganguzi police post.

Rebecca Akatwijuka another eyewitness says Sanyu hit Bagamuhunda in the head when he asked whether he had bought the proposal of renovating the old house.

Officers at Kamuganguzi police post informed this reporter that an assault case  had been registered under file number SD 06/05/10/2018.

The officers also say tthey have advised Bagahumunda to go to Kabale Regional referral hospital for a scan as investigations into the matter continue.
