Two Egyptian nationals arrested in Uganda with expired visas, forged student IDs
Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema
Police in Gulu District in northern Uganda are holding two Egyptian nationals for over staying their visas and possessing forged Ugandan student identity cards.
The suspects were arrested Tuesday morning from Pawel Pudyek Sub-ward, Pawel parish, Gulu Municipality in an intelligence operation conducted by police and their sister security agencies.
Police said the suspects were found in possession of visas that expired in January this year and IDs belonging to Cavendish University, Gulu branch.
The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema told journalists in Gulu Town that Ahmed Abdel Razek, 23, and Abdel Rahman Sultan, 27, were illegally staying in Uganda which prompted their arrest.
Mr Okema said following intelligence information they received, they stormed the suspects’ residence at around 6am but upon seeing police, the suspects allegedly jumped over their perimeter wall fence and ran away.
They were later arrested with the help of the locals in the neighbourhood.
“After arrest, we checked and searched their rooms and found that they were in possession of expired Egyptian visas to Uganda since January 2019 meaning they were illegally staying in Uganda. We also found them with forged identity cards from an institution of Cavendish University Gulu branch,” Mr Okema said.
They are detained at Gulu Central Police station on charges of illegal stay in Uganda and forgery.
“We are going deeper to find out their motive of staying illegally in the district because it’s a security threat. These people are renting good places within the Municipality but with no clear source of work,” Mr Okema said.
He added that the police also found suspicious metallic objects in their room and that the bomb squad under the Uganda People Defence Force [UPDF] tactical field engineering unit at 4th infantry division barracks has been asked to examine them.
