Wind blows off school, home roofs in Ntungamo

Strong winds have destroyed at least five homes and a school in Ntungamo district during a Monday downpour. The rains characterised by heavy winds, blew off the roofs of the five homes and structures at Kagamba secondary school, Ihunga sub-county.

At Kagamba secondary school, the winds blew off the roof from the buildings that house the staff room, offices and senior one classroom. No one was injured. Eric Gumisiriza the director of studies says that the students were immediately evacuated after the winds became wild. He says that all books and property in the damaged building were destroyed.

Possy Kamugisha, the head teacher at the school says that they will face difficulties to renovate the damaged facilities due to lack of funds. He explains that at least Shs 12 million is needed to replace the destroyed iron sheets.

Ntungamo district education officer Odo Arigye said that his office is working on a report to be sent to the ministry of Education for intervention. Arigye urged schools in the area to ensure that they plant more trees around their premises to avoid incidents of this nature.

Ntungamo district chairperson Denis Singahache says that a team of the district leadership was sent to the school and homes to assess the magnitude of the damage.
