Uganda netball officials wary of complacency in She Cranes camp
The Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) technical officials might be forced to withdraw some of the players named on the She Cranes final squad for the upcoming World Cup tournament due in South Africa later this month.
This comes two weeks after Uganda submitted a 15-player squad to the organisers of the World Cup, which throws off on July 28 at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town.
The team, comprising 20 players, entered residential camp at the African Bible University in Lubowa in early June. Since then they have been training at the ARVS facility in Nakirebe, Mpigi. However, some of the players have become complacent after making it to the final squad.
“These players are not aware that they can be replaced with those who were left out, according to the laws. They seem unbothered about training ever since the (final) list was submitted to the organisers,” one of the UNF technical officials, stated.
Rule 6.17 of the world netball body dictates that “the National Associations are under continuing obligation to inform WN of any changes, which affects their player’s eligibility for an International event…” creating an opening for five other players to make it to the final squad.
Meanwhile, we profile (below) three more players named on the squad submitted for the World Cup.
MUHAMEED HANIISHA
Haniisha is a graduate communication expert, having gone through the famous Kibuli SS’ sporting scheme. The towering player is a defender and a shooter. She has competitively fit into both roles at her club, KCCA.
STELLA NANFUKA
Nanfuka turns up for Prisons in the domestic league, commanding the backline. She is one of the two surviving players that featured at the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool.
Her first appearance in national colours was at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old, who also featured in the 2019 African Championships, wants to turn professional after the World Cup in Cape Town.
SHADIA NASSANGA
Nassanga’s netball career can be traced way back into her primary school days – having been born in a family of four sisters, all netballers.
A Business Administration student at Victoria University in Kampala, she is an aggressive attacker, with exceptional shooting proficiency, a feat that has earned her a solid position at her domestic team, KCCA, in the Ugandan league.
