Another official from the ministry of Internal Affairs has died on plane.

The coordinator of the national focal department on small arms and light weapons department in the Internal Affairs ministry, Commissioner of Police Okello Makmot becomes the second official from the same ministry and third official to pass on aboard a plane in a period of four years.

In September 2015, then Internal Affairs minister, Gen Aronda Nyakairima also died on an Emirates plane enroute to Uganda from South Korea.

A year later in September 2016, another official, Ambassador Najuna Njuneki, who was in charge of Special Duties at ministry of Foreign Affairs also passed on aboard a plane in London on his return journey from a conference in Sweden.

Makmot breathed his last aboard an Emirates flight yesterday afternoon while in transit to Dubai on his way to Uganda from the USA where he had been for training on small arms proliferation.

Deputy police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the death of Makmot but declined to divulge more information, saying they were yet to get details.

A reliable source told URN on condition of anonymity that Makmot’s body was dropped off in Dubai where the plane made a stopover following his collapse.

A police officer attached to police headquarters revealed that the police management was still contemplating how to release the news about the death to the public.

The Internal Affairs has officially communicated Makmot’s death to the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola.

“We have received communication from our ministry of Foreign Affairs originating from the Ugandan Embassy in Abu Dhabi that the above named officer died while in transit from New York, USA to Uganda via Dubai…,” reads the letter signed by Aggrey Winy on behalf of the Internal Affairs ministry, permanent secretary.

Adding that, “We have been requested to inform the relatives of the deceased and make arrangements for the body to be repatriated to Uganda.”
